About the album

Hugo Read has developed an independent way of playing and composing in which new jazz, elements of contemporary music and rhythmical energy, acoustic base and electronic additions are combined to a sound world of its own.

Read wants to cross borders between new classical music and jazz, and in addition he sees himself as a composer of mostly suite-like forms as a basis of his work.

From 1972 he studied flute and classical saxophone at the Cologne College of Music.

Since that time there have been international concert activities in the field of jazz and new classical music as well as productions of chamber music and as a soloist with orchestras (among other things Ensemble Modern, New Art Ensemble) with all major radio companies in Europe.

Since 1979 Read has cooperated with Karl Heinz Stockhausen, Stockhausen, fascinated by Read's musicality and his very lyrical sound, engaged him for a big project (Sternklang) in the Beethovenhalle Bonn. Later he should join many other concerts / tours u.a. Premieres of the two operas Tuesday and Thursday contribute with light. Also chamber music such as In Friendship became a saxophone with his help directed. The two pillars, jazz and new music, are still the main focus today his musical output and are documented on CDs / LPs, and countless radio productions.

Hugo Read has been awarded the prize of the state of NRW outstanding achievements in the field of jazz and new music,
and is, since 1991, professor for saxophone and ensemble direction at the Folkwang Universität der Künste Essen.
Hugo Read hat eine eigenständige Spiel- und Kompositionsweise entwickelt, in der neuer Jazz, Elemente der zeitgenössischen Musik und rhythmische Energie, akustische Basis und elektronische Ergänzungen zu einer eigenen Klangwelt kombiniert werden.
Read will die Grenzen zwischen neuer klassischer Musik und Jazz überschreiten und darüber hinaus versteht er sich als Komponist von meist passgenauen Gestaltungsformen als Grundlage seiner Arbeit.
Ab 1972 studierte er Flöte und klassisches Saxophon an der Hochschule für Musik Köln.
Seitdem gibt es internationale Konzerttätigkeiten im Bereich Jazz und Neue Klassische Musik sowie Produktionen von Kammermusik und als Solist mit Orchestern (u.a. Ensemble Modern, New Art Ensemble) mit allen großen Rundfunkanstalten in Europa.
Seit 1979 arbeitet Read mit Karl Heinz Stockhausen zusammen, Stockhausen, fasziniert von der Musikalität von Read und seinem sehr lyrischen Klang, engagierte ihn für ein großes Projekt (Sternklang) in der Beethovenhalle Bonn. Später folgten viele weitere Konzerte / Tourneen u.a. Uraufführungen der beiden Opern ‚Tuesday‘ und ‚Thursday‘sind mit Licht ausgestattet. Auch Kammermusik wie "In Friendship" ist mit seiner Unterstützung durch das Saxofon bekannt geworden. Die beiden Säulen Jazz und Neue Musik stehen auch heute noch im Mittelpunkt seines musikalischen Schaffens und sind auf CDs / LPs und unzähligen Radioproduktionen dokumentiert.

Thomas Rückert began to study at Cologne Music College under Rainer Brüninghaus and John Taylor in 1990. In 1999, he traveled to New York for the first time where his brother, the drummer Jochen Rückert, had already lived since 1995. Thomas found the stay in the metropolis of jazz to be inspiring and moving. In addition to working with Marc Johnson, Greg Hutchinson, Donny McCathlin, Greetje Kauffeld, Mark Murphy, Kevin Mahogany, Tony Lakatos, Randy Brecker, Adam Nussbaum, Ack van Royen, Jay Anderson and John Goldsby, collaboration above all with Lee Konitz was ground-breaking for him. The pianist internalized his advice 'Donʼt play what you know' audibly.

Reza Askari (double bass)

Reza Askari is regarded as one of the most promising German talents on contrabass. Born in Fulda in 1986, Askari first played the electric bass and then switched to contrabass later. He is currently studying at the Folkwang University of Essen under Robert Landfermann in the degree program Master Of Improvising Arts. Despite his young age, he has already played with big names such as Marc Ducret, Jiggs Wigham, Herb Geller, Benny Golson, Jeff Hamilton, Nicolas Simion, Florian Ross, Frederik Köster and Pablo Held.
